Productive struggle dwells in active sense-making, not in quick and easy answers. Establish a school culture that encourages drawing, exploring, modeling, and constructing mathematics, just like kids play in a sandbox. In the sandbox, students build up representations, look at them differently, and tear them down before starting over again with new ideas. Build a culture that resists answer-getting and instead promotes playful and productive sense-making that invites all students to participate.
